Car lockouts happen all the time. Many people, no matter how vigilant they are, have locked themselves out of their cars. However, a lockdown situation does not only mean locking yourself out of the vehicle. It also encompasses cases involving broken car keys or ignition failure due to an issue with the key.

Either way, the situation is quite frustrating, especially if you cannot access your car in an unknown location. Moreover, most cars nowadays come with an auto-locking system, which means the doors lock automatically after a few minutes of inactivity.

If you find yourself in a car lockout situation, there are a few things you can do:

Things To Do If You Are Locked Out Of Your Car

Try To Open One Of The Doors

There is a high chance that all the doors of your car are locked. However, sometimes, the auto-lock does not work, and one of the doors might be left unlocked. If you are lucky, you might be able to get in the car.

String Method

This method will only work if you have left one of the windows slightly open and if the doors’ locking button on the inside is somewhat protruding.

Tie a slipknot on a string. This method will work well with a relatively thicker string such as wool or jute. Slip the string inside the car using any small opening. You are not advised to open the window or the door using a tool forcefully. This can shatter the glass or permanently damage the car door.

Once you have slipped in the string, position the knot over the lock post and slightly tug it, it should wrap around the post. Once you make sure it is secure, pull the string to open the lock.

You might have to attempt this a few times before succeeding.

Wedge And Rod Method

This method might slightly damage your car a little so follow it at your own discretion. For this, you need a wedge or a doorstep. Moreover, it will only work if you have automatic door locks.

Take the wedge or doorstep and insert it under the top part of your door. Once you have inserted the tool, slightly tap it. This will open the door a little. Now you can use the string method or use something else to open the lock of the door.

Call For Professional Help

If you don’t have a spare key and are facing a lockout situation, it is best to call for professional help. If you are locked outside your car, you can get yourself out of the situation by following either of the methods mentioned above. However, if you are facing other lockout situations, the chances of getting out of it without professional help or a spare key are bleak.

Most roadside assistance companies provide lockout services where they send over a locksmith to help you create a new key on the spot.

How To Prevent Lockout Situations

If you have already faced a lockout situation but don’t want to go through the hassle again, here are a few tips you can follow to prepare yourself for the future.

  • Keep a spare key in your wallet or purse.
  • Make multiple copies of your car key.
  • Give a trusted friend a copy of your key so you can ask them to bring it to you in case of an emergency.
