Northcote High School has been a beacon of excellence for the youth of Northcote, and surrounding communities throughout its history.
Northcote High School, a co-educational school that is large and vibrant, is highly successful. The school was founded in 1926 and has maintained strong traditions and a rich intellectual environment. This is evident in its record of positive student achievement and participation in the extensive co-curricular programs.
It is one of very few secondary schools that have not been renamed or moved since its opening.

It is the largest independent provider of secondary education in Melbourne’s northern suburbs. The school’s NAPLAN and VCE results are impressive and have shown steady improvement over the past 20 years. The co-curricular activities include music, sport, debate, leadership, international travel, study tours, and leadership.
The school currently has approximately 1,800 students. They currently enroll around 300 Year 7 students per year. The majority of these students are from local primary schools. They often receive applications from over 30 primary schools.

In the 1920s, only five Melbourne high schools combined offered less than 2,000 places in the metropolitan area.
Local member of parliament John Cain Senior, who would become the future Premier, led the effort to create a Northcote high school. Lt Colonel J. Sidney Kitson was the first headmaster. The school had 71 boys and 61 students in its first year.
The St George’s Road building was used by February 1929. It was officially inaugurated in September by Hon. H. I. Cohen. This new space allowed for an increase in enrollment to 468 boys and then to 522 the next year.
All Northcote High School girls were required to attend Preston Girls High School by the Education Department.
As the school grew, so did its curriculum and facilities. It was able to accommodate a maximum number of 700 boys. The school gained a reputation as an international school, a leader in inter-school sports and a school with strong academic traditions.
The school decided to offer girls places again due to rising pressure to be co-educational. Close to half of the students are now female.
Despite the academic turmoil of the 1990s Northcote High School maintained its reputation as a leader in providing rigorous academic education for Melbourne’s inner north.
Grants were made possible by grants for facility improvements, the creation of a science and tech centre of excellence, and piloting new learning technologies. The music program, French, Chinese, ACE, and Duke of Edinburgh programs were all expanded or introduced.
The rapid increase in enrollments in the early 2000s was accompanied by a new building program, and the expansion of Music, Creative Arts, Physical Education and Sport programs.
The school was one of six Navigator schools funded by the state and became a pioneer in using learning technology in the classroom. It also has a Science and Technology Centre that was specifically designed to offer professional learning opportunities for international and Australian teachers.
The school also expanded its commitment to international education by offering a special program for international students in Years 11-12, and establishing three sister schools partnerships. They were the first school in China to offer a VCE overseas program.
