Edinburgh Gardens
Among Yarra’s biggest parks in 24 hectares, Edinburgh Gardens is situated in the center of North Fitzroy.
It was made by a grant of property in March 1862 by Queen Victoria and laid out by Clement Hodgkinson, who made several of Melbourne’s parks and gardens.
The Edinburgh Gardens precinct is characterized from the escargot shaped reserve initially set apart for Public Gardens, the Fitzroy and the North Fitzroy Cricket Grounds along with a [former] railroad station and line. The special form of the gardens originates from the resolution between distinct road grids and the urge to make a circus together Georgian lines. The strategy to get a grand crescent with fundamental gardens, playing grounds and railroad facilities has been designed as the most plausible response to this issue. There are loads of open yard areas, shady and sheltered spots, garden beds and specimen trees, joined through an extensive network of paths.
The park is exceptional due not just to the size, but also the strange attributes, and strange background of this reserve. By way of instance, the centre piece of this park is a base designed to maintain a massive statue of Queen Victoria. But this statue just stood watch on the gardens for 3 years prior to mysteriously going missing over a century past. It was not replaced, and the bare plinth stays as an odd reminder
Edinburgh Gardens is easily reachable by public transportation, near Rushall Station along with Brunswick Street trams.
